VASUNDHARA - Democratising Natural Resources Governance

Use of Geo-spatial Technology in CFR Mapping & Monitoring:

Spatial technology is a tool which collects spatial data, analyse data and helps to take decision for welfare of society which is a multi-disciplinary system includes Geographic Information System (GIS), remote sensing (RS), Global Positioning System (GPS).

Community forest resource mapping is necessary for recognition of rights over resources and further monitoring of resources for well being and sustainability of forest as well as dependant community. This spatial technology helps in securing rights along with betterment of their livelihood through monitoring and management of forest resources and keeping local traditional practice and culture intact.

Community forest resource mapping is the process of identifying the traditional forest boundary and recording their traditional landmarks, natural resources using GPS technology and display them on the form a of map using GIS technique.

Our Intervention
Major area of intervention is mapping of CFR and Habitat of PVTGs in different parts of Oriassa and Chhattisgarh. Predominantly we work in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Deogarh, Kandhamal, Nayagarh,Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundergarh as well as we extend technical support to other groups like CSOs and Administration in Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

Our Method
CFR mapping process includes both social processes and technological aspects including use of GPS and GIS technology. Steps we follow :

  • Preparation of sketch map of community forest resources area or habitat in Gram Sabha with the presence of all the community members including women and village elders and creating awareness on CFR under FOREST RIGHT ACT 2006.
  • Use and advantages of GPS technique for accurate recording of traditional forest land and their resources
  • Gps training of volunteers, village youth, women and Government officials like RI, AMINs, forest officialofficials
  • Recording of spatial data of traditional landmarks, boundaries with GPS and sharing with central GIS lab by the trained persons.
  • Preparation of final maps (using various GIS tools and techniques) and maintain data in central GIS lab
  • Sharing with the community for authentication map, if required
  • Final submission to concerned authority to confer to the community and inclusion in official records for Record of Rights

Way Forward

  • Extend GPS and GIS technology services to our partners, government as well as long and short term training courses
  • Tools and methods for forest and resources monitoring in our intervention areas
  • Adaptable strategies for forest resource management and monitoring
